This map uses the LAR to depict American Indian and Alaskan Native lands. The LAR includes Federally-recognized Indian reservations, land held in “trust” or restricted-fee status, and historic Oklahoma reservations. Other layers include state boundaries and the BIA’s Regions. This map is used widely by organizations within and outside the BIA as a base template to locate BIA’s assets in reference to other relevant BIA entities.

The American Indian Reservations dataset depicts feature location and other associated data for the Federally-recognized tribal entities in the contiguous United States and Alaska. The map displays American Indian reservations, Oklahoma Tribal Statistical Areas, trust or restricted-fee land, and mixed interest tracts. This map was used widely by organizations within and outside the BIA as a base template to locate BIA’s assets in reference to other relevant BIA entities.

Indian Lands of Federally-Recognized Tribes of the United States: 1885 and 2016 Comparison

The 1885 and 2016 Comparison Map depicts the 1885 reservation data, digitized from a historic map drawn by Paul Brodie, and the 2016 reservation data. Brodie’s map shows the size and shape of reservations of 1885 which had been established by treaties between the United States government particular tribes.

Indian Land Areas Judicially Established 1978 and American Indian Reservations

The judicially established Indian lands are based on information provided by the Indian Claims Commission. The Indian Claims Commission was established by Congress in 1946 to settle land claim disputes between American Indians and the United States government. This map portrays the 1978 judicially established American Indian land areas that resulted from the cases before the United States Indian Claims Commission or US Court of Claims in which an American Indian tribe proved its original tribal occupancy of tract within the continental United States. These areas are shown in relation to the Federally-recognized tribal entity boundaries last updated in 2016 along with the BIA and Regional office locations.
